Services were held at 10 a.m. today in Shirley Brother Irvin Hill Chapel for Samuel J. Newlin, an employee of the railway mail service for 30 years, who died Saturday in his home, 127 S. Ritter Avenue. Burial was in Hillsboro.  Mr. Newlin who was 76, attended Butler University and the Indiana University law School.  He taught several years in Fountain County rural schools.  He began practicing law in Veedersburg in 1895 and later served as city attorney.  Mr. Newlin entered the railway ail service in 1902 and served two years on the Chicago and Cincinnati division of New York Central and then transferred to the Indianapolis and Peoria division.  He was a life elder of Downey Avenue Christian Church.  Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Stella B. Newlin; a daughter, Mrs. Helen Heine; two brothers, John H. Newlin, Indianapolis and George E. Newlin, Baltimore, Md and two sisters, Mrs. Lenna Saltsgaver and Mrs. Oscar Janeway both of Hillsboro. A brother, the Rev. William H. Newlin of Crawfordsville died in 1945.

Samuel J. Newlin, 76, farmer resident of Hillsboro died at his home in Indianapolis Saturday forenoon following a lingering illness from diabetes. He was a retired railway mail clerk of the NY Central, Peoria & Eastern Division and has resided in the city for several years.  He was born June 23, 1870, the son of John W. and Nancy Rivers Newlin on a farm near Hillsboro. He practiced law in Veedersburg in his earlier years. He was married to Vonia Hayes, Hillsboro on April 14, 1908 and she died June 7, 1914. One daughter was born in this union, Mrs. Helen Heine of Indianapolis. On Sept 18, 1917 he was married to Mrs. Stella Matthews who with the daughter survive. He was a member of the IOOF and Masonic lodges and the Downey Avenue Christian Church of Indianapolis. Other survivors are two brother, George Newlin of Baltimore, MD and John H. Newlin of Indianapolis and two sisters, Mrs. May Janeway and Mrs. Lenna Satzgaver of Hillsboro. The Rev. Weigman pastor of the Downey Avenue Christian Church was in charge of the funeral services held at the Shirley Brothers Funeral Parlors in Indianapolis at 10 a.m. Monday. Retired railway mail carriers served as pall bearers.
